NBHM PhD Scholarships for Postgraduate, NBHM Scholarship for Masters Degree Students

The NBHM Phd Scholarships is meant for students possessing a Masters Degree in mathematics, physics or statistics and intending to take up research work in mathematical sciences leading to a Ph.D. degree. The selection of the scholars is done on the basis of academic records, written tests and interviews by a selection committee constituted by NBHM.

Applications are invited through advertisements in leading national newspapers. Prior to joining an institution for doing research, the research scholar is given a choice of joining some select institutions (subject to the approval of the institution) to take courses in mathematics for strengthening their background.

The NBHM Phd Scholarship is tenable during course work at the specified institutions and during the period when the scholar works for his Ph.D. degree at any Indian university/research institution (other than DAE aided institutes) where the necessary facilities exist for undertaking research work in an approved subject chosen by the research scholar.

The NBHM Phd Scholarships is tenable for one year once the scholar starts on his/her work for the Ph.D. degree. It is extendable up to a total period of five years (not including the special training period of one year, if availed) for pursuing the Ph.D. degree in a university or research institution (not with DAE). The extension for subsequent years beyond the first year is subject to satisfactory progress, to be assessed each year by University department/Institution concerned. Extension for a fifth year after the start of the Ph.D. programme is given on the basis of a review of the scholar's work by NBHM.

The research scholar is entitled to leave facilities as per the rules of the institution to which he/she is attached. However long leave without stipend will not be allowed. At present the Ph. D. scholarship consists of the following: Stipend at Rs. 8,000/- p.m. during the first two years. At the end of two years, a committee constituted by NBHM assesses the work done by the research scholar.

If the work is found satisfactory the stipend may be enhanced to Rs. 9,000/-p.m. Contingency grant of upto Rs. 5,000/- per year. If the scholar is not provided hostel/subsidized accommodation by the institution, House Rent Allowance (HRA) will be paid as per Government on the basis of a certificate from the institution and a receipt about the actual rent being paid by the scholar.

IMSc offers PhD and integrated PhD programmes in Mathematics. Applicants for the PhD programme should have completed a Masters degree in Mathematics or Statistics by the time they actually join the programme.

Applicants for the integrated PhD programme should have completed a Bachelors degree in Mathematics or Statistics by the time they actually join the programme.

Exceptional candidates with a Bachelors or Masters degree in other areas will also be considered for admission to the integrated PhD programme.

A monthly stipend of Rs. 12,000 for the first two years and Rs. 14,000 in subsequent years (subject to satisfactory performance), together with an annual contingency grant of Rs. 10,000, housing and medical facilities will be provided. Further details of our academic programme can be found here. Admission to both of these programmes is based on the candidate's performance in an interview. Candidates are selected for the interview by screening applications. This screening is typically based on the applicant's performance in the PhD Scholarship screening test of the NBHM.

Applicants must apply directly to the NBHM for the PhD Scholarships of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) and appear for that screening test. They need not send IMSc any separate application. IMSc (and HRI) will get the test scores and copies of the applications directly from the NBHM and will independently send call letters for interview to candidates who have passed the screening criteria.
